A study published in April 2026 in the Journal of Interpersonal Violence has garnered significant attention for its finding that 95.1% of surveyed men admitted to using at least one strategy to pressure a woman into sexual activity when they knew she did not want to and had not consented. Titled "Isolate, Inebriate, Intimidate, Repeat," the research was conducted by Lucia F. O’Sullivan and Scott T. Ronis using anonymous surveys of 2,689 men aged 18–34 from the United States and Canada.
The study specifically focused on interactions with women with whom the men shared no prior romantic or sexual history. Researchers identified 36 distinct tactics ranging from psychological manipulation to physical force. The authors noted that the assurance of anonymity was likely essential in eliciting these high disclosure rates, which align more closely with the high rates of forced sex women report experiencing.
