Why am I building
@Nostria?
To earn enough money so I can work on this for a very long time, of course. But that's not the primary goal of it, that's just a means to the end of building this fantastic experience.
Nostria is about human connection. Back when I was growing up, there was something called BBS, Bulletin Board System. This was small communities where you phone up with your computer to a central, where people could post notes on a digital bulletin board. It was a very social place, especially for computer nerds.
When the World Wide Web arrived, it was a very cold place. I didn't use it much in the beginning because I felt it was a cold, inhospitable place. It was, and it still is. It tricked me, and it trick all of us, into believing that it could be a social place to gather with family and friends, to enjoy and prosper.
Instead what happened, it that everyone was put into the same rooms. People with very different ideals, morals, passions, views and values. Dropped into the same ring, and instead of being something good for humanity, our physical desire and need for social interactions, was exploited by corporations. We started arguing and fighting. Dissolving families, friends, relationships.
Many attempts were made to ensure people kept coming back, such as groups. Groups on Facebook has been very valuable for me, I've enjoyed a lot of great conversations and learnt a lot. It's now been years since I left most of the groups and I don't use Facebook much, just to keep in touch with that one person who is stubborn and doesn't want to install freedom tech.
Nostr creates clusters of social networks through the architecture of the protocol. Groups is not needed, dynamic and organic groups form through the following and interactions. Anyone can access any information, but it usually does not surface to my screen. There is no algorithm that attempts to optimize my screen time by showing me posts that would trigger my instinct to prove someone wrong. Everyone knows the meme about someone being wrong on the Internet. This is the best way to get engagement, everyone wants to correct each other. My single most popular post on X, is a mistake I made, not intentional.
Nostr is built on cryptography, unlike centralized social media. That means we all together, is building a strong Web of Trust network that cannot be unbroken, it cannot be infiltrated as easily. With the growth of AI and bots, this is very important to keep humanity sane and well.
Nostria is built to enrich your life, through connections and interactions. Nostria rejects the model where you are the product.
Nostr needs to mature on many areas, Nostria will do its best to help with this. One of these areas is how content gets promoted and traction.
Everything we post is not equally good or important. This post as an example, is for me important, I'd rather want this to get traction, than something else I've posted.
Today there is primarily two ways users are discovering content: Through your "Following" feed and "Trending". This is very rudimentary and we need more balance. A lot of good posts today, ends up with zero interactions. It doesn't have to be like that.
Trending has very obvious issues and their metrics is easily exploitable. They are regionally useless, meaning that if I live in a global region that has little Nostr adoption yet, it doesn't give me any relevant trending content for my region.
It also is not relevant from the viewpoint of my social network. It's a global perspective.
Nostria is building its own Search Relay, with the purpose of enabling a more balanced and personalized trending view, that is relevant for you. We hope this development will be a very welcoming one. It's about enabling access to indexed data in the way you want it, not to build yet another centralized algorithm.
Nostria has an algorithm already, it's built into the app. It's based upon your actual usage, which profiles you interact with. It's only local and private, ensuring privacy for you.
With the Search Relay, I can combine this algorithm with the searchable posts - to provide you with a much better social network experience, where the valuable and meaningful posts will reach your eyes.

Finally, the number one mechanism for improving the reach of posts on Nostr, is reposts or quotes. Likes and Zaps are great, but they usually don't result in additional views. Perhaps some clients promote posts that was liked by your following, but it's mostly reposting and quotes that leads content to reach new eyes. So please repost, if you don't mind.

Yes, the fake account can always use another valid NIP-05, but that is equal to someone attempting to trick you into going to "micr0soft" website.
Nostria has a spam filter for post where hundreds of accounts is tagged, if you're an existing user it will be set to unlimited. New default is 100. If you're already using Nostria, check it out in settings and set it to your preferred limit.
