Fall photography is officially over for 2025. We’re now in the shadow zone of fog photography (sitting between fall and winter). Hopefully I can produce some fog shots soon. Stay tuned. ✌️
Any good tutorials or tips for capturing nice whispy fog pics, mine usually just end up with the scene sans fog
I really need to replace my stolen Pentax (probably with a canno) it has been sooo long
What usually works for me:
- find a single interesting subject (usually a tree)
- get close (3-5 metres away), directly facing or from a lower ground upwards
- use wide to mid range lens, open the aperture wider than usual for landscapes for softer look (f4-6.3 instead of f8-11)
- let the fog do the rest, separating your subject from everything else
- try different approaches to the postproduction - maybe B&W or desaturated colors
If you only have longer lens that also works but you need to get a bit more distance from the subject. I have found that square crops with the subject directly in the middle, filling up most of the frame, works great.
