This will be a never ending battle. Best thing is to give control to the parents. They can guide their children how to not be on social media sites they shouldn’t be on.
That’s what I think too. I’m sometimes surprised other kids already have phones. The good thing, my daughter has never asked for one yet. But I also notice that other kids are much better than her in navigating the internet, so I’m conflicted.
The big ones are all pretty well censored. But I'd still supervise the chats. The key is just to teach her to ask it questions to learn things. And when she doesn't know something, ask it for more info about that thing.
I’m not defending their decisions to be a company that’s in charge of the “protocol,” just that the unavailability of their app doesn’t mean the network isn’t accessible. People can and should also use VPNs.
Bluesky kind of sucks but it’s better than Xitter in most ways. It’s still not and will never be Nostr, which is why I don’t have strong opinions about how they should run things.
