Why does every person from Germany that I happen to talk to have this deep existential dread?

Or is it national guilt. They’re educated to feel that they are not meant to be strong. That the last time Germany was strong terrible things happen. I wonder if this is why they push their ambitions through the EU. Ie when they talk about a strong EU they’re trying to say a strong Germany but can’t. Japan on the other hand is not taught anything about their part in WW2. Just not going to talk about it.
Maybe related, but the people I talked to have some deep personal issue or situation, they are running from something, they have a relationship that's eating them, etc. When they travel, it's not to explore or have fun, it's to escape something.
This probably doesn't apply to everyone, but somehow I keep meeting folks like that.
