I understand the premise of this however "manual labor" or so titled "blue collar work" isn't the only way to build resilience and discipline.
For example, 99% of the jobs referenced are probably best served from one's own back yard. You know...get the kid off the video games and into the real world.
Also, blue collar work isn't known for building critical and strategic thinking. Sure it requires short term solutions...but it's really about "here is the process, follow the process...if you don't then you won't become a journeyman..."
The crux of what I'm trying to communicate is this:
