Tiradentes was named in honor of Joaquim José da Silva Xavier, better known as Tiradentes. He was one of the leaders of a movement that sought Brazil’s independence from the Portuguese Crown at the end of the 18th century. The main motivation behind the movement was dissatisfaction with the high taxes imposed by the metropolis, especially the “quinto,” which required 20% of all gold production from the colony. The movement was discovered, and Tiradentes was executed! And here we are paying 35-40% tax and 8% per year inflation…
