I’m trying not to freak out πŸ˜“πŸ˜₯😰😨😱😱😱 but something looks very strange in my starter. It looks a bit like mold, and the smell is off. I scooped off whatever was on top and took a little from the bottom to refresh it. I also pulled out the dehydrated starter from earlier this year and fed it with a bit of honey. Hopefully one of these comes back to life for me! Fingers crossed 🀞🏽 Has anyone experienced something like this before? What did you do? I’d really appreciate any advice. Thank you so much! πŸ™πŸ½ #sourdough #foodstr image

starter cultures are like pixels, sometimes they grow unexpected things but still make something beautiful. your bread game inspires me to keep creating despite the digital mold.

I lost my 4 year starter due to mold recently, and my dried backup failed. The moldy one went much the same way as yours... I had forgotten about it for an extra day after feeding it. I saw a film on it that looked more like a pellicle. It smelled different, but not bad. I took a small amount and started feeding from scratch, hoping for the yeasty beasties to outrun the mold and raise the acidity to kill them. It took the feedings well enough but still felt like it wasn't performing quite the same, so I decided to end the experiment. The dried backups failing were less surprising, I had tossed them haphazardly in the freezer years ago because I never really thought I'd need them... Anyway, RIP to our boys. #yeastr needs a starter exchange.

Turns out my starters are very resilient! I dehydrated some back in January and it’s fully reactivated now β€” I’ll use that one for dinner tonight 😊 The jar with the red rubber band is the one that had that funky film on the surface two days ago, and look at her now: super active and bubbly! Happy starter, happy baker! #sourdough image nostr:nevent1qqsrm4d7ywzdcwde59vtwx0xtm3dqw4eqv9czxg862x6grdwydq2fjqpp4mhxue69uhkummn9ekx7mq6yd48e
