furthermore, I don't understand how switching pools puts you in a better position. Are you looking for a pool that provides alternative block templates ? I know of none that exist.

I'm looking for a pool that isn't going to run BIP 444 which is a hard fork no matter what they lied to you.
I consider taking away the core template a clear warning. Their payout method traps your sats too. Total shitshow.
