So what happens if you wipe your phone before the border search? Is it probable cause because you have a suspiciously fresh os and no contacts etc...?

In that case it is EVEN MORE DIFFICULT TO PROVE INTENT. They wont even be able to prove it in this case because he was under duress, in a different mental state, and did not enter the pin himself.
