You aren't adhering to a principle, if you are irrational.
I put them at opposite ends of a scale because they are effectively antonyms.

This might sound somewhat hypocritical but people can still act rationally in their support of fanatical beliefs (sometimes😅). Obviously, this isn't the case for all. I see your point, though. Fanatical behavior is too often driven by irrationality.
