I have already supported many of my friends in setting up their self-custody Bitcoin. It was often difficult to explain what the 12/24 words are and, above all, what options there are for storing them. I always felt like an alien trying to explain to a human how a UFO works.
Now, for the first time, I have helped a colleague to set up her Bitcoin self-custody with a Bitkey. So yesterday I handed her a Bitkey and watched her set it up. It was eye-opening. Such a simple and well-thought-out process. I think I will continue to onboard bitcoin newbies with Bitkey's. She immediately lost her beads of sweat on her forehead when I told her there was an option where she didn't have to hide words. And also, she was able to add me as a recovery contact in case of an emergency, which was extremely reassuring to her and to me as well. I understand the drawbacks that exist with Bitkey (privacy, vendor lock-in, etc.), but you can't imagine how easy and straightforward this worked. Very satisfying! I got one to test it and my wife did it in no time- could be a game changer but yeah like you say it has drawbacks
