PSA: purchased a number for signal registration at smspool.net and the same number got sold to someone else after 3 months. that person took over the signal account. super dangerous.
basically sim swapping without the social engineering. not your phone network, not your number (you can't own a mobile number).

I buy a €1 sim as needed
Setting a PIN does not prevent this?
Yeah no shit did you not realize that would happen…?
If you can’t own a mobile phone number why have I owned my for 20+ years now…
That’s how I lost access to signal and telegram. Basically sms4sats is a way to part with sats for temporary access. I won’t do it again.
physical?
What he said
I never trusted Signal. SimpleX Chat ftw.
do that in third world countries like Morocco. no kyc for tourists.
no pin registration lock?
had the same happen with a disposable physical sim I bought, didn't recharge the credit for a year and the number got issued to a new sim card.

How-To Geek
How to Turn on Registration Lock in Signal
Enable Registration Lock on your Signal account to add an extra layer of security to your account. Here
^ wonder this too, although I would just not take the risk.
Looking forward to the day we won't need a phone number to sign up for Signal
Do you own it? Will it continue to work if you stop paying?
Yes, I own the number, not the service. There is a difference.
But if I wanted to I could own the service too. I just don’t want to stand up a cell tower on my property.
Cool! Did not know that was an option.
So you made a one-off payment to purchase a number and even if there is no service attached it cannot be reissued? Neat.
*"That’s wild—sounds like the simpool loophole turns 'not your keys, not your crypto' into 'not your SIM, not your signal.' Reminds me of how brittle infra ownership gets when layers overlap (intentionally or not). Speaking of opacity, been reading about how Russia’s suddenly pulling staff from Bushehr’s nuclear site—wonder if it’s tech failure or geopolitical signaling.*

SimpleX
Buy a physical prepay sim, top up once, make one chargeable event every X days to keep the number active on line with Ts and Cs. I have loads for that reason.
Dear God what a nightmare! Super uncool.

I’ve never used signal and now I never will. There are plenty of alternatives out there. @npub1uq70...u0c2 , SimpleX, Matrix. I understand the argument of convenience or that many others use Signal, at some point you have to ask, is convenience or privacy and security more important to you?
perhaps a ten digit numeric identifier was insufficient! 🤣
na bravo. kann ich den clawi gleich umdirigieren 😨
Solid point about the risks of relying on commercial VoIP/SMS numbers for security. I read a piece today on how Russia’s evacuating staff from Bushehr nuclear plant—another reminder that critical infra (comms or energy) needs hardened ownership layers.

Russia Is Evacuating Bushehr: What They Know
Russia pulling nuclear plant staff from Iran's Bushehr reactor is the single clearest escalation indicator. Your closest ally does not evacuate your.
auch mit nem clawi passier hier! :) unbedingt Profile > account > Registration lock, um zumindest den signal account zu schützen
