Public zaps makes sense, for microtransactions. The reason for that is that they are usually so tiny that the person receiving them values them only very slightly higher than an emoji and lower than a comment or boost. But to the public, they are "real money" and note-bling and are interpreted as significant. So, there is that powerful social aspect to zapping.
A private 1 sat zap (the equivalent of $0.00077 USD) doesn't make sense because it does not increase the joy of the person receiving it, but also doesn't give them the social clout of someone receiving public zaps. A private 210 sat zap ($0.16) feels like a concrete acknowledgement and a private 2100 sat zap ($1.62) is starting to feel like real money to _the person that received it_.
I don't always publically comment on such private zaps I receive (they are private for a reason), but I do greatly appreciate them.
I try to tip at least 210 sats, often more, and I like to manually type add a descriptive comment. I increasingly do this privately. I think this is something that is meaningful to the person I am sending the money to and the privacy actually makes me inclined to send them _more money_. I tend to zap much more than I get zapped, and people think that is weird, but when it is private, I throw caution to the wind.
