It’s not new, it’s a few years old (16gb). I just reformatted it to FAT32. Removed all files, except for the firmware file .dfu The Coldcard will not recognize the file on the card
Simple step: insert microSD before connecting cable and booting coldcard A thing to try: get a different SD, if it recognises, format the SD card using the coldcard option. Then put that into your computer and move update file to SD
Try to update to an intermediate version (e.g. 5.2) and then to latest. There seems to be an issue with large version bumps.

Are you trying to update via an SD card - can’t see one inserted. If for some reason you’re trying to update via a usb connected to the laptop then you probably have the USB disabled. In that state it only functions as a power source and can’t read data.
Hmm guess I should read. I would try reformatting the SD card on the coldcard and trying again once you copy the firmware on to the sd again.

I had the same issue. I just used it to sign the transactions to a new wallet and ditched the device.
Got the seed words? Just import them to an offline machine. Make a TAILS drive real quick. Or just risk going to a hot computer for a moment to get them off? And put them immediately into a new wallet generated offline. And then a new wallet generated by dice. TAILS is the way IMO.
I didn’t have this exact issue but had a problem where it got stuck trying to start the firmware upgrade. Try unplugging, taking out the SD, wipe the SD, and just restart.
I can't help but can sympathize. The same thing happened to me yesterday - could read the SD card and then suddenly couldn't (tried cleaning up the SD, unplugging, etc). On top of that, it wouldn't let me wipe the current seeds. I tried multiple times in a few different ways, both before and after the firmware update. After all the warnings that I agreed to, it just announced "aborted" and that was that. I don't have much of a stack so wasn't dealing with the panic of many folks, but for me it was multiple Coldcard failures on top of the entropy problem.
I tried 2 different size microSD - 2 gig and 16gig, neither worked. I ended up using Mac terminal to update firmware on Coldcard, got new seed generated using 99 dice rolls. What a giant pain in the ass. I love you guys.
Tried simple step- didn’t work. Will try the other idea in future if needed. For the firmware updated using Mac terminal. Thank you!!

Use the cold card to format the SD card, then copy the file to it, then "bless" the file image
You're taking a big risk further entrusting your stack to a brand which has irrevocably lost the fortunes of nearly 1,200 #plebs. My advice (do as you please, of course): forgo that hunk of plastic completely and procure other options.
