A few years back, Achachilabtc returned to his home country, Bolivia, to 'Bitcoinise it.' Since then, he and the team at Bitcoin Research (@npub1zjfv...yggq) have made an incredible effort to do just that. They've built Bitcoin tools for the Bolivian context, onboarded over 100 merchants, and educated countless number of Bolivians about Bitcoin. And because transactional privacy is at the core of their mission, they've recently created their own Fedimint-based wallet service and have begun onboarding their community members to Fedi. The issue with bitcoin adoption in the third/second world, is that you’d have to be insane to ever spend Bitcoin. It would be life changing to just buy it and never spend it.
As someone who documents #Bitcoin adoption around the globe, I was surprised that I hadn't known more about the incredible work that the team from Bitcoin Research ( @npub1zjfv...yggq ) is doing in #Bolivia 🇧🇴 until I recently researched it and communicated with a member of the team. Not only are the Bitcoin Research team members — Achachilabtc, @npub17xlk...60nh, and @npub1x6qj...m5s6 — avid Bitcoin educators, but they also work closely with developers to help develop Bitcoin tools specifically for the Bolivian context (tools like a version of @npub1m0st...40un for Bolivians). The team also even contrubutes to academic literature on Bitcoin. More than anything though, I can tell that the work that the Bitcoin Research team does comes directly from the heart and out of genuine concern for their fellow countrypeople. And so it was an honor to document this work in a piece I recently published for @Fedi below. I hope you enjoy reading it as much as I enjoyed writing it. View quoted note →
