You asked "how do you verify" and I thought this was a good example to share. There's more context that is relevant that makes it more of a verification but the idea that ergot, from which LSD is derived, was found in the jawbone and in a small receptacle that once contained a special beer is indicative of consumption of ergotized beer. Another example would be the 1996 30-by-30 square meter farmhouse named the Villa Vesuvio which was excavated in Scafati on the outskirts of Pompeii. Because of the thick layer of pumice and volcanic fragments covering the site, it was "perfectly sealed" and confidently dated to AD 79. To your point, we can question the exact date of when Vesuvius erupted and question the sources who give us that date, but, functionally, we can date the remains to have been sealed at least as far back as whenever Vesuvius popped off, regardless of the precise date. I do agree with you though, that dating seems dubious AF to me and I have a suspicion that there's plenty of bogus dating research floating around out there. Geologist Lance Weaver did a recent episode of DemystifySci in which he shared the evidence for his claim that we need to rewrite 500 years of history. Right at the 2 hour mark, he's talking about this book that I'd never heard of prior to checking out that episode, and he starts talking in ways that heavily resonate with my sarcophagus theory I share with Daniel on 562. Well, I've also shared it with the hosts of DemystifySci on their secondary show called Paradigm Drift so they recognized it and called out some vindication for me on air which was cool, but I don't want to forget to mention that Weaver also fires shots repeatedly at dating research so I'm in good company on that front. Mario Buildrep was another DeymistifySci guest whose work suggests that certain dating research is bs. I'm trying to prove stuff about history using science, language, and every tradition I can find. I have some dating claims for some ancient stuff but they're loose claims and based on my research, are independently consistent with one another which is, at the very least, interesting and potentially true.
