I can think of 2 ways that you can prove it or disprove it to yourself:
- adopt a belief & see what unexpected emotions arise within you under certain stimuli. This is much slower but you'll do this anyway if you're going down this path.
- wait until you experience a strong negative emotion (ie wait to be triggered). Ask yourself what would I have to believe about myself for this to be true?
The first is just observing actions, thoughts & feelings shift as you adjust & rearrange your beliefs.
The second is a technique for uncovering those beliefs you hold without consciously being aware of them. Once you identify & can articulate an irrational belief, it dissolves.
