Personally, I think the most irritating part of this is that this guy speaks as if he knows anything about the everyday person? He probably has more Sats than most people using NOSTR combined. Most of the time I like what Jack has to say, but this is a hard miss.
jack
sats is definitely the wrong term and is stopping everyday people from holding and spending bitcoin.
i agree with steve’s points in this video.

Why couldn't he understand the everyday person? Honestly when I first started out on nostr I was confused what zaps and sats were. Thankfully my husband explained but it was not easy figuring this stuff out. And getting a wallet connected was awful. I'm still figuring things out.
I imagine if I had less time and help I would have given up! Terminology is important. Not everyone knows who Satoshi is. Or will have time to figure it out. Like there is no way I can explain to my mom that Satoshi is the anonymous person who made Bitcoin and has disappeared. I think that would freak her out and question Bitcoin as a whole.
I feel Jack is at least trying to suggest things that would make things more accessible. I can at least appreciate that. Not sure if changing sat to bitcoin is the way. But I think something similar to byte, megabyte, gigabyte would be helpful.
Also Jack has access to everyday peoples transactions and usage of Bitcoin via CashApp, Block, and Square. That is a lot of insight.
Just because a person has a mass amount of data on people doesn't mean they understand them.
People are capable of learning.
If you go to another country/region you have to learn what the currency is to use it even if you will only be there for a short time.
Personally, I think this change would only create further confusion and slow down the adoption process by the everyday individual, but it won't slow down the larger corporate or government groups that wish to capture as much of the market while they still can.
Sure. If I go to another country I use their currency or just my credit card that doesn't charge me for international purchases. I don't learn the name of the individual coins or whatever. It just works.
Bitcoin is not so straightforward though. And there is no easy way to use it. I have to find loopholes and work arounds. The only thing I am using bitcoin for by paying directly is data for my phone and my Proton Mail account.
There is no other easy way for me to use Bitcoin in my day to day life. Its like using Yen in the US - no one will recognize the money.
My main point is that we should think about ways to make it more accessible. Maybe it is clarifying names, or maybe it is something else. But dismissing things just because people should be able to do this or that isn't how we make things easier. Clearly things could be improved. I think it is good to discuss these things.
Should we should redefine a penny to dolls? Children today don’t know who Abraham Lincoln is. How am I going to explain who honest Abe is and how he freed the slaves with the emancipation proclamation. That would freak my kid out if he found out about slavery and that Lincoln was assassinated and question fiat as a whole.
Stop defending Jack’s bullshit. Billionaires are out of touch and it’s sickening to see you imply Jack knows best because he has everyday peoples data. 🤮
I agree about making things easier. So maybe Jack should implement Lightning into Square which make far more accessible to the everyday person when they go shopping where Square devices are being used.
If some random pleb that most people don't know had made the same suggestion about changing names people would laugh it off and move on already, but this a corporate billionaire who has many ways of influencing the culture.
When he wore a Satoshi shirt to the Super Bowl (one of the most popular and expensive live events in the world) it had great influence and the culture supported him. Myself being one of them. This time the majority of the culture seems to be saying, 'no'.
I'm not defending him. I literally said at least he's trying to make things more accessible. I don't necessarily agree with the change, just open to hearing ideas for making bitcoin more accessible.
We probably should change the name of the dollar because it has lost all meaning.
"On 2 April 1792, U.S. Secretary of the Treasury Alexander Hamilton reported to Congress the precise amount of silver found in Spanish dollar coins in common use in the states. As a result, the United States dollar was defined[27] as a unit of pure silver weighing 371 4/16th grains (24.057 grams), or 416 grains of standard silver (standard silver being defined as 371.25/416 in silver, and balance in alloy).[28] It was specified that the "money of account" of the United States should be expressed in those same "dollars" or parts thereof. "
Last I checked $1 does not equal 24.057 grams, or 416 grains of standard silver. As of right now it is like $25.
My point by writing all this out is that we don't actually know the meaning behind things. And if it doesn't work we don't use it. Maybe the name is irrelevant.
I just don't understand the hostility to trying to make thing more accessible. If it is just because you don't like Jack and that he is an out of touch billionaire, alright fine. If it is dumb idea, OK. Then do you have a better idea to make things more accessible?
I love that you gave some suggestions. Maybe it is a good thing he sparked such outrage, I think it is important to discuss ideas and come up with better solutions.
I think I'm just personally tired of all the negativity on my feed about OP_return and this name change. But maybe it is important to talk about. Just trying to look at it in a constructive way.
Dollars have been renamed throughout time. It went from gold certificates to silver certificates to IOU federal reserve notes (fiat).
I don’t hate jack, I try not to hate anyone. I dislike what people say and or do not the person. I dislike when people try to change bitcoin. I dislike when a person who has had success thinks their opinions are more valuable than everyday peoples’.
There is no guarantee that rebranding sats to bitcoin would actually make a positive difference with bitcoin adoption. In my opinion it will create more confusion and further divide bitcoiners.
Sats the standard. Forever 21.
I think understand what you're communicating. Thanks for the discussion. It allowed me the opportunity to put my thoughts into words that could be backed up with some logic rather than just my emotions.
Setting aside the name change thing, because I personally don't find it to be a good idea. And I don't feel like wasting time on it since it seems we both agree it is not a great idea. The part of this conversation I am interested in is making things more accessible.
From what I understand Bitcoin has changed from the Block size wars and adding lightening to it and probably other things I don't understand.
What would you suggest to make Bitcoin more accessible to the very day person? Right now I personally feel like it is hard to explain and use. If using it in the day to day life were easy then I wouldn't have to explain it. And vice versa.
I actually the Jerk now. He's just proven that he was complicit in the censorship on Twitter. He's just proven he will say anything for money or because they have video of him with a 16 year old.
I would say time, we need more time.
Bitcoin is the fastest growing network that ever was. Bitcoin adoption is outpacing the internet, mobile phones and all the technology that came before it.
Word of mouth is the best advertising and it’s underway. We just need a little bit of patience.
Imagine how hard electricity was to explain or the internet.
Bitcoin is fine as it is we don’t need to keep fucking with it.
Hate.
And I never trusted that hippie from day 1
The internet and electricity are constantly being improved though. It becomes more efficient and easier/safer to use.
I think something that would make things more accessible is making more tools like nostr where they encourage the use of Bitcoin. Because right now I am barely able to use it directly. I would love to have a Shopify version. I know Plebian Market and stuff exists but it is more of a platform to post your stuff to sell and you have to handle each individual transaction.
This is where the time component comes in. With enough time we will have all the applications and hardware
I have been weary of him since his involvement with JayZ and Tidal. Seems like he got captured on film at one of JayZ and Diddy’s freak offs.
it's so transparent, and it's quite hilarious they think this is gonna fly
