Not the same thing but, when I was a kid and tried to save any sort of money I earned instead of immediately spending it, sooner or later my mother would steal from my wallet and excuse it as “but I’m buying stuff for you”. Eventually, I gave up trying to save altogether. She did live through a period of hyperinflation so while it doesn’t excuse the behavior it at least explains it.
