If they are onboarding to a custodian, they are not on boarding in my opinion. I don't shame them. I also agree with you that normies won't have a node. That's the problem with lightning. And I agree we should be working to on board as many people. I think lightning is a bad way to do it. That's the disagreement. Lightning will never be for normies. That doesn't mean push them to custodial lightning. It means come up with a solution normies CAN use custodially.

Normies use Zelle, Venmo and PayPal 🀣 Again meet people where they are. Why is it such a problem if normies do not run a node and use custodial solutions until they understand the game being played and then can graduate to self custodial solutions? Custodial lightning is far better than any of the other options out there haha You saying it is a β€œbad way to do it” is just a short sighted opinion and not any better than the monero bros that attack bitcoin and say it is a failure
"you can just buy the ETF" is meeting them where they are. This compounds the issue, it doesn't make it better. Separately, I'm a fan of graduated wallets. Ecash, custodial lightning, liquid, on chain... I'm not saying it can't be a stepping stone, but for most people it's good enough and to me that's not good enough. The whole thing is pointless if people aren't actually holding Bitcoin themselves. In that case, we've just reinvented the old system.
