By @Unhosted Marcellus IMO BIP-110 is (so far) the most important event in Bitcoin of the 2020s, even more than Taproot activation. Every bitcoiner can see that mining has been almost from the start too centralized for the canonical game-theory to hold in practice. However mining pools had always kept appearances and caved in to the will of noderunners. BIP-110 mandatory signalling day was the first time in Bitcoin history that the dominant Sv1 pools abused their position and kick a good chunk of Bitcoin users out of the network that were trying to fix long-standing bugs in the protocol, instead of fixing said bugs and keeping everyone in the same chain. What follows from this, and what I would have learned if I was in their position or a state actor, is that this group can also impose top-down soft-forks to the network of nodes and kick out those who try to explicitly reject the new rules. Personally this episode has helped me understand the phenomenon of Bitcoin developers and even maintainers that work in the field but have zero skin in the game. And unfortunately none of the bitcoiners who really opposed BIP-110 understood that by counting on pools to ignore an UASF instead of running an URSF themselves they gave away their agency to pool operators to govern the protocol. Now that the precedent is set I fully expect down the line that the dominant pools will abuse this power again to force miner-activated soft-forks on user nodes, which have no realistic way to be stopped since UASFs and URSFs have been shown to not be effective in this centralized mining environment.

The thing that does not convince me of this way of seeing things is that miners can now unilaterally impose changes. How would that be possible in practice since the vast majority of nodes would have to upgrade their set of consensus rules?
How would this look like in practice for example if miners wanted to stop the halvings?
I think that is why satochi wrote that whoever owns the longest blockchain will control bitcoin, because the smaller nodes will need to take data from the longest chain to continue operating
