One thing people overlook is you can hide your mistakes in the details of the apparently more complicated construction. Both have their place and time, it's the misuse that stands out. Good example to show this could be the original finished pyramids. Arguably modernist. But you should not confuse beautifully designed modern construction (very rare) with modern Fiat construction. People have and will always try to do the best with the materials and Technology they have access to. If the Egyptians had better they wouldn't have used stone. But most of what we interact with on a daily basis has less thought into the design then your toothbrush. It's just a check list to minimally satisfy insurance liabilities, not safety not the usage and definitely not the design. Has everything to do with inflation, you can have pride in your work but without funding only so much you can build.
