Yes, there's multiple distinct servers that site above the Mach kernel with interprocess communication that can coexist. The userland, what you'd work with if you had a mac, is Darwin, but you should in theory be allowed to use any userland you want, it's just that nobody's sunk the time into it. ... Besides me, anyways 138 unmodified aarch64 freebsd binaries out of ~800 are running natively on macos, btw XNU is debatably open source, see also:
