My mastodon server stopped syncing so I went in to do maintainance on it. It was about a year out of date so I started following the instructions to upgrade the release version.
After several hours of navigating dependency hell I hadn't gotten the first version bump working because it also required migrating all my data to a new postgres version and the postgres version migration tool failed due to permission errors...
Suffice to say I'm not bothering to run a mastodon server any more. Running a nostr relay is zero headache while the mastodon server is a bloated app that is not admin friendly at all.

I had similar frustration in the past with some of my self hosted stuff, I understand your pain. When it's of worth the effort, it's time to free up your hardware ressources and your time.
I had the same thought trying to install it years ago. Too hard basket.
