I have a little interest in mesh possibilities too, I heard recently about LolRa pushing some super cheap microchip to the limit but I don't know enough about the space to see how this competes/compares with meshtastic. Article writer made it seem like a big deal though

I don't think there is a 'best' but I bought a lillygo t-beam on Amazon and I'm very happy with it
What are you looking to do?
Fiddle around with a prototyping board that you can add sensors to?
Send/receive on an established mesh with an all in one handheld unit? Or use phone for interface?
Increase your local mesh with a solar-powered base and a big antenna?
