Just over 1% of Bluesky users are on servers not controlled by the Bluesky company. That’s not the promise of decentralization they’ve promised.

I thought about this a lot during your recent conversation with Rudy... It seems like at this moment, ActivityPub/Mastodon is the place that is achieving *both* meaningful decentralization at a meaningful scale.
(I like Nostr plenty but it's got the former, not the latter)
Bsky appealed to people because it was an alternative to Musks kingdom, not because it was a decentralized alternative, imo.
And you need an email to sign up. You need an email for every account you want to make. It sucks.
You don’t actually need an email. I setup a PDS and got it federated with the main Bluesky relays and app view without email, KYC, or any other permission required.
So now they just need a PDS that you can run from your phone
