I'm not really focused on the media stuff just yet. It's text-only for the moment. So "discord alternative" is a bit of a stretch for the gaming/media focused use cases for now
> An important caveat to Roomy's model lies in how it uses ATProto PDSs. Data is in a place where anybody in the world can download it, and the ATProto PDS doesn’t let Roomy store private data. As such, Roomy is not yet a private, secure chat solution by default. > > To reduce risk, Roomy encrypts direct messages, but the developers describe this encryption as experimental and unaudited, and warn that metadata can still be visible. Until these issues are resolved, Roomy is best seen as an interesting concept, but shouldn't be trusted with sensitive data. Flotilla does support access controls, and non-experimental encrypted chat
really curious to see how they will handle the PDS thing. my understanding is they are like nostr relays + blossom servers in theory, but they have a much more centralizing nature since their identities are tied in with them?
K fair enough. I realize that we use the video stuff more than practically anything else... Maybe that's the key thing we need to replace
i think flotilla is a good start, but needs additional features to be able to compete with Discord's offerings. i thought Universes was the answer to that, but that initiative has stalled sadly.
Flotilla is universes now actually. We haven't rebranded, but that's the slot it's filling at AOS. I imagine you're talking about voice/video? That's coming, but in general the emphasis for flotilla will be a little different from discord.
yes, im mainly talking about voice and video calls, but also per channel permissions and group roles and permissions. if that can be achieved, then the only other hurdle is performance. once these are all addressed, we'll have a great alternative on our hands and something to truly compete with against Discord.
Channel permissions are done, group roles are still pretty primitive (pretty much just admin, and not editable in flotilla itself, but of course coming eventually). Performance is much improved recently, but of course always a work in progress.
PDSes or flotilla relays? Solid pods are much more structured, relay access control is mostly implicit. I think this can be good, because it avoids protocol bloat. I don't know much about PDSes but from the article it sounds like they're pretty much public write
