It's too late now, but the language about supporting an alternative (competitive) currency in the final letter was a huge mistake. That's not an effective "defense" - it's begging to be made an example of. It probably wouldn't have made a difference, but that's the whole point of this severe punishment - to serve as a warning for others that attempt to threaten the money monopoly.
