What type of radiation is hitting them so far up? Or is it the plane and instruments they are strapped into long haul
Cosmic rays and nowadays microwaves peoples various emmiting devices. If you have ever have developed a tan on holiday and flew home to find it diminished it was because the melanin was helping to protect you from the radiation.
Not surprising at all. Radiation levels at 10km altitude are not trivial.
