Yeah, but having vacations is a European-style sort of thing for any country's residents to have. Lots of US employees don't have a single day of paid vacation or sick leave.

Really? 🤨
You know what? I always had the thought that this country has a subculture and the more i learn the more is added. But i could easily be biased. I hope i am wrong. I really do. Because the shit happening there, tends to reach us too...
Rarely any sick leave usually have to cut into PTO until it runs out. Some can get unpaid off time but it usually risks penalties or termination. Pretty standard across industries. There are some laws around this once your business size increases over X employees. Also reasons small businesses remain small or go really large. In the middle is hard between 11-44 employees is a shitty tax bracket. Generally you don't have a high enough revenue and the government hits you hard with regulation, makes you offer benefits, pay more payroll taxes, and other employment tax bs. So youll see many, especially owners remain off the payroll to keep the employee count low so they don't get slammed with regulation.
Bigger companies have pretty good (or did anyway) benefits including pto, but the hoops you have to jump through to take it are usually bs so youll see 40-50 y/o once they hit seinority take a week or so for vacation a year. Once over 50 maybe 2 weeks spread out.
I know so many that are maxed out on PTO hours but they just won't take it, or the hoops are just too much or the workplace is so unstable now that they are afraid if they fall too behind from vacation they might be put on the list of forced retirement.
