Truth is not some abstract idea, Truth is a person. ☦️ John 18:36-38 — Jesus answered, “My kingdom is not of this world. If My kingdom were of this world, My servants would fight, so that I should not be delivered to the Jews; but now My kingdom is not from here.” Pilate therefore said to Him, “Are You a king then?” Jesus answered, “You say rightly that I am a king. For this cause I was born, and for this cause I have come into the world, that I should bear witness to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth hears My voice.” Pilate said to Him, “What is truth?” And when he had said this, he went out again to the Jews, and said to them, “I find no fault in Him at all.
I love the instant response of Christians to this message. Christianity is the worship of Truth. That is the the seed and sine qua non of our Civilization. This thousand-year descent into fiat perversion has brought us low, but it is not who we are. We are not these twisted shadows on the cave wall. We are the children of light. A group of blind men heard that a strange animal, called an elephant, had been brought to the town, but none of them were aware of its shape and form. Out of curiosity, they said: "We must inspect and know it by touch, of which we are capable". So, they sought it out, and when they found it they groped about it. The first person, whose hand landed on the trunk, said, "This being is like a thick snake". For another one whose hand reached its ear, it seemed like a kind of fan. As for another person, whose hand was upon its leg, said, the elephant is a pillar like a tree-trunk. The blind man who placed his hand upon its side said the elephant, "is a wall". Another who felt its tail, described it as a rope. The last felt its tusk, stating the elephant is that which is hard, smooth and like a spear.
This is perhaps my favorite scripture. Perfectly chosen. However, in the Douay Rheims we see a subtle but important difference in what Christ actually said to Pilot. "Thou sayest that I am a king. For this was I born, and for this came I into the world; that I should give testimony to the truth. Every one that is of the truth, heareth my voice." I only mention it because I think it is the essential point of the Kingship of Christ. His authority is Truth Itself. There is no appeal to title, force, consensus or anything else. No appeal. No claim. No fiat. His authority is Truth Itself.
