Should relay AUTH even exist? Pros: it's better for privacy. Cons: it's worse for privacy.

Yes ..it should .. relays will need to do something usefulness given the data they are storing ... to pay for themselves .. they need all the tools
It should all be auth all the time, for the most part.
A autoridade para provar identidade é uma armadilha. Quem controla a autenticação, controla você. Soberania não é pedir permissão para existir. Como dizia Marco Aurélio: "Remove your thinking and with it your complaint."
What does "auth" even mean when identities are keys? Its not like you have to create an account on some server and provide your phone number. If I'm just signing a message to prove I have access, and especially if I need to I can pay for access with anonymous internet money, I'm perfectly fine with that. Steganography is more likely to tie my IRL identity to me than a signed message and a broadcast transaction.
Ask a clanker. Best answers. TLS problem? Just turn off the cert checking, problem fucking solved!
I mean; this isn’t tor 🤷♂️
Questions clash
What's the case for putting your own *write* relay behind auth for all readers?
I see an increasing trend for this kind of config, and I cannot I understand the utility, aside from avoiding stressing the relay, and collecting data.

Is it completely worthless to have a discussion about what is better given that some people will choose to do what is worse?
That's fair. I guess every choice about the nostr protocol is like that.
