Audience capture is real, and further I would say it is bigger than many realize. My sci fi novel touches on this. People fracturing into their own digital tribes. My personal kneejerk approach tends to break audience capture (eg I start to feel it and then purposely post something that angers them and punches me in the face and we all drink a beer afterward), but I view audience capture as being the new dominant problem going forward vs weaksauce mainstream propaganda. The individual protection of this is mainly to follow people who you like but that sometimes disagree with you. Seek out smart disagreements. By doing that, you resist the urge to follow only whoever aligns with your view. View quoted note →

I have slight disagreements with pretty much everyone I follow, some major but I still value their perspective.

It takes too much self-confidence for most people to seek out countervailing viewpoints🤣🤩😹 image

I think this emerges in any group. An individual is idiosyncratic and group less so in proportion to its size. If you want a cohesive audience, group or community there will always be some emergent norms associated with it.

Not to sound sarcastic, but I disagree. Have some curiosity and discernment. Wonder as you see fit like a brave individual. Enter the rabbit hole, and if it bears fruit, then fuck what they told you.

to be honest, even though I almost pathologically have to find flaws in everything, I sometimes tone down my posts or skip them entirely to avoid pissing of followers too much

Seems like less and less people like to discuss or debate issues on here. Nostr is loaded with “number go up, bitcoin will fix everything” echo chamber. Makes me sad.

That’s why the comprehensive school *idea* is great. Have kids from all walks of life and backgrounds together to find a way to ‚get along‘. If you segregate kids too early, it’ll be much harder for them to accept different POVs. (Deliberately emphasising the *idea* as irl the system often doesn’t work well for various reasons) View quoted note →
