As someone who did not grow up with religion and has no religious family or friends I have a genuine question. How do you start reading and learning from the bible in an intentional way? How do you begin a journey to find God? #asknostr

This is a great question. Call on Jesus and ask him for guidance. He died for our sins and rose to make us right with God. The Bible is like a cathedral that can be accessed through many doors. If you have time and patience you could start at the beginning and slowly plod your way to the end. I would recommend first starting with the gospel of John. Ask God to help you understand and apply it as you go. Also, find a local church that treasures the Bible as God's holy word and the proclaims the good news of Jesus' life, death, and resurrection. Where a pastor or elder can guide you on your journey. Christ's church is his hands and feet. Holler at me if I can help in any way, and may our heavenly Father guide and gladden you with all that he is for us in Christ.
I read most of the bible from cover to cover when I was 16 with the hope of finding god. That was a mistake because I lost my faith. This has social consequences so I think you should start with the Jefferson Bible. A few years ago, I began watching Jordan Peterson videos and I liked the way he reframed some of the stories like comparing Jonah throwing lotts to Pinocchio gambling and being swallowed by the whale. It's basically the same story. I also like how Peterson never really admits he believes in an actual daddy in the sky or an afterlife but lives his life as though a just god does exist. It reminds me of Marcus Aurellius's position. That's the way I have come to see it now. Hope that helps.
I try to think of it not as whether I believe in something, or someone else's something, but as, What do I believe? With an open mind toward well thought perspectives, and without requiring 'believers' to have perfectly descriptive words.
You can start at the beginning and read the Bible through, or start in the New Testament. Luke and Acts were written for an audience that didn't already have so much background to the story, so that's helpful. It can be tricky to find a good church, but it's good if you can. I'd start with prayer. Ask God to show you who He is. It doesn't have to be fancy. He can help you understand what you're reading, and send people across your path to help. You get to ask the Author as you read. It's okay to read without understanding everything. An overview helps you get an idea what's there, and you can dig in more later. Ultimately, even the Bible isn't really the point. It's about Jesus, and the way He makes it so we can know God. When you're ready to surrender and repent, letting Him forgive you and be your Lord and fill you with His Spirit, the rest comes together. I hope this helps. You're welcome to reach out anytime!
