This is how we do it.
As calm as possible.
In the flock in the pastures.

The circle of life. Are those lambs or sheep?
Indeed the cycle of life. This was a small gimmer/ewe lamb from this spring.
Harvesting 12 in total this fall. Most lambs. But also our beloved 9 year old ram.
Someone once told me if we were interested in getting sheep, to start with a couple young rams and slaughter them at the end of the season. That way we could see if it was something we’d like do without a long commitment. If it was, then get a few pregnant sheep the following year. Would you concur with that advice?
Not a bad advice.
One thing to keep in mind: people rarely sell or part with their very best animals. So building a high-quality flock — calm, friendly, healthy, disease-free, easy birthing, great mothers — can take real time and effort.
But it’s absolutely worth it. This is generational wealth.
Just yesterday a friend came to borrow the bolt gun. He had two lambs that were too far gone from heavy intestinal worm loads and needed to be put down.
Livestock come with many joys... and many sorrows.
That’s good advice. We don’t have much space, enough for two sheep with lambs probably. Joys, sorrows and headaches.
