George C Scott's performance is impeccible. When Slim Pickens arrived for an audition, he was wearing his normal attire: cowboy hat, cowboy boots, jeans, and a western shirt. The film staff thought he had dressed in costume to be "in character". When production started, Kubrick didn't intend for the movie to be a comedy, then realized that a comedy was better suited.
