Someone had suggested bundling short messages inside Bitcoin transactions. Satoshi’s reply was instant and surgical: > “It would be unwise to have permanently recorded plaintext messages for everyone to see. It would be an accident waiting to happen. > If there’s going to be a message system, it should be a **separate system parallel to the Bitcoin network**. Messages should not be recorded in the block chain. The messages could be signed with the Bitcoin address keypairs to prove who they’re from.” That single paragraph is the **original NOSTR white-paper**. image A censorship-resistant messaging layer, signed by Bitcoin keys, running **parallel** to the money—exactly what we have today. **Fast-forward to 2020** A Brazilian developer who goes by nostr:nprofile1qqspwwwexlwgcrrnwz4zwkze8rq3ncjug8mvgsd96dxx6wzs8ccndmcpz4mhxue69uhhyetvv9ujuerpd46hxtnfduhsz9mhwden5te0wfjkccte9ec8y6tdv9kzumn9wshszxrhwden5te0ve5kcar9wghxummnw3ezuamfdejj7ekel7y read Satoshi’s words, opened a markdown file, and typed: ``` Nostr = Notes and Other Stuff Transmitted by Relays ``` He shipped the first relay in weeks. > NOSTR is the **parallel layer Satoshi described**—the free-speech nervous system sitting on top of Bitcoin’s indestructible money. Nostr doesn't sit on top of Bitcoin.

Thank you for your comment, It's more a metaphorical statement not a technical one. It refers to the bitcoin payments embedded into the entire ecosystem. Satoshi argued in 2010 to use a network outside of Bitcoin for messaging and that is a bigger picture here: image What do you think about this statement from 2010?

The philosophy of Nostr and that of Bitcoin, however, are quite different. In the case of Bitcoin, consistency is key, while with Nostr the philosophy is that each does what one wants. Bitcoin relies on economic incentives, while much of the Nostr ecosystem is maintained by volunteers who want to promote free speech, often even at an economical loss. I have seen that post before. Nostr events can be trivially collected, even across relays. One could make a dump of basically every reachable event. It would easily fit on a USB stick. That dump could then be uploaded through BitTorrent and, because Nostr events are signed, it would be the same as having all posts permanently on chain. So if that's unwise, so is Nostr. You should assume someone will do this. Nostr events aren't on a blockchain, but blockchains aren't the only way to store and share something permanently, as long as there is interest. Nostr messages, except for encrypted private ones, are publicly and permanently recorded as plaintext for everyone to see. Now, I don't know if Satoshi here was talking about private messages or public posts (which can also be referred to as "messages"), such as Nostr notes. But assume public notes will be archived and forever provably associated to your public key. I happen to see the archivability of Nostr as a feature.

It's a feature indeed. #archivability There still an option on some clients to delete the message so if someone is connected to just a single or two private/public relays it might get removed before it goes out everywhere. Some small communities out there can operate in a complete dark mode, with encrypted messages only and private relays.. Bitcoin is a messaging system too, with perfect tradeoffs the monetary application is the best utility, not a storage imho, wyt? Nostr goes much beyond the social media, it is just the most popular application of this protocol at this stage. Where do you think it can take us a few years from today?

My assumption is that Satoshi was talking about messages intended to be read by a specific person or group, but not intended for public consumption. Otherwise, the entire internet and social media space could be described as "messages" in generic terms, and assumed unwise, since it is trivial to create a permanent archive of anything that exists on the internet as plain text, as you said.
