Autism is both a blessing and a curse.
It's banded about all too freely now and wasn't actually a clinical diagnosis till the late 30's, prior to that, if you didn't have a loving or supportive family, you'd have just ended up in an asylum for being "Feeble minded". Some of the greatest thinkers and inventors were Autists, by the very definition, they have to be!

Schismatrix is a sci-fi story by Bruce Sterling set in a space faring future...
At one point it describes a society that tries to use genetic engineering on a generation of children to increase their society's wealth and power.
The results are ... Mixed. Some of them achieve great things, but a lot of them just wind up tunnel-vision focused on some obscure math problem, or art nobody cares about, etc
