Another underrated, but extremely useful feature of @Nostrich: note translation. Sometimes I'm reluctant to follow non-English, non-Italian, or non-German accounts, even if I'm sure they are posting interesting stuff. The reason is how tedious it is to copy/paste their notes into a translator. Nostrich makes this a 1-click action, and suddenly Nostr is bigger and more diverse. PS: When support for polls?

Today I completed another small step forward in the de-Googling process I started this summer: migrating from Notion to a local instance of Anytype! I was able to reach this milestone thanks only to my "collaboration" with Claude. I have always been intimidated by system administration tasks, and for decades that kept me away from Linux and self-hosting, pushing me further into the arms of Google, Amazon, Notion, etc. AI, and Claude Code in particular, changed all of this. I deployed a StartOS server running a Bitcoin full node, LND and Alby Hub Lightning services, a Nostr relay that keeps a copy of all my Nostr activity, an Immich server where I moved 30+ years of family photos for all family members, and now Anytype as well. I configured secure access to these services both from my home network and remotely, thanks to a static IP and a robust firewall and router configuration. On top of this, there are scripts that ingest utility bills and generate household expense reports, monitor Bitcoin wallets, manage local and remote encrypted backups (to Hetzner data centers in Germany), make backup copies of notebooks created on my Boox e-ink tablet, etc. I repeat, given my limited technical skills, none of this would have been possible without Claude's support. I never would have ventured into this level of complexity. And it's not over yet: other decentralized services are bound to follow. If I did it, you can do it too!

Ieri ho pubblicato sia in inglese 🇬🇧 che in tedesco 🇩🇪 un post in cui raccontavo di aver firmato una petizione al parlamento tedesco: la petizione 201716 che chiede al governo di mantenere la norma che rende esentasse i bitcoin detenuti a titolo privato per almeno un anno. Spero sia utile raccontare anche in italiano 🇮🇹 perché l'ho fatto e cosa potrebbe cambiare. Ho vissuto in Germania per 6 anni, ma sono rientrato in Italia da tempo, e in Germania non voto e non ci pago le tasse. Eppure l'ho firmata lo stesso, e penso che ogni bitcoiner europeo dovrebbe farlo. Non servono né cittadinanza né residenza tedesca. La scadenza è il 15 settembre. OGGI In Germania, i bitcoin detenuti a titolo privato sono considerati "altro bene economico". Se li vendi dopo più di 12 mesi, la plusvalenza è esentasse. Se li vendi entro i 12 mesi, è tassata con la tua aliquota IRPEF, con una soglia di esenzione di 1.000 €. COSA VUOLE FARE IL GOVERNO La decisione del consiglio dei ministri del 6 luglio riclassificherebbe le plusvalenze generate bitcoin e dalle altre criptovalute come redditi di capitale (Einkünfte aus Kapitalvermögen) e applicherebbe un'imposta secca di circa il 25% su ogni vendita, senza più alcun periodo di detenzione esentasse. Nulla di tutto ciò è ancora legge. Non c'è un disegno di legge, non c'è una data di decorrenza. È esattamente per questo che si può ancora fermare. PERCHÉ FIRMARE La regola dei 12 mesi non è una scappatoia. È un trattamento fiscale coerente con la visione di bitcoin come bene patrimoniale, un approccio confermato più volte dalla giurisprudenza tributaria, che riconosce e premia il risparmio distinguendolo dal trading. La Germania ha quindi oggi uno dei regimi di tassazione delle criptovalute più favorevoli d'Europa. Perché dovrebbe interessare anche ai non tedeschi? Perché la Germania è spesso presa a riferimento per le decisioni europee. Se la più grande economia dell'UE mantiene una norma che tratta il bitcoin come risparmio e non come una fiche da casinò, quell'opzione resta sul tavolo a Roma, Vienna, Lisbona e Bruxelles. Se la Germania cede, "allinearsi al modello tedesco" diventerà un argomento per il contrario. Il quorum di 30.000 firme è già stato superato, quindi la commissione parlamentare di cometenza dovrà trattarla in seduta pubblica. E ogni firma in più rende quell'audizione più rumorosa.

Ich bin Italiener, ich kann in Deutschland nicht wählen und zahle dort keine Steuern. Mitgezeichnet habe ich trotzdem — und ich finde, jeder Bitcoiner in Europa sollte das tun. Weder deutsche Staatsangehörigkeit noch Wohnsitz sind dafür nötig. Frist: 15. September. 🇩🇪 HEUTE Privat gehaltene Kryptowerte gelten als „andere Wirtschaftsgüter" nach §23 EStG. Nach über 12 Monaten Haltedauer ist der Gewinn steuerfrei; darunter greift der persönliche Einkommensteuersatz mit einer Freigrenze von 1.000 €. WAS SICH ÄNDERN SOLL Der Kabinettsbeschluss vom 6. Juli zum Haushalt 2027 will private Kryptowerte den Einkünften aus Kapitalvermögen zuordnen — pauschal rund 25 %, Haltefrist ersatzlos weg. Beschlossen ist noch nichts: kein Gesetzentwurf, kein Stichtag. Genau deshalb ist jetzt der Moment. WARUM MITZEICHNEN Die Einjahresfrist ist kein Schlupfloch, sondern eine in sich schlüssige, von der Rechtsprechung bestätigte Behandlung von Bitcoin als Wirtschaftsgut — sie belohnt langfristiges Sparen statt Zockerei und ist eine der bitcoinfreundlichsten Regelungen Europas. Warum das auch uns außerhalb Deutschlands betrifft: Deutschland ist der Referenzfall. Hält die größte Volkswirtschaft der EU an einer Regel fest, die Bitcoin als Ersparnis und nicht als Casino-Chip behandelt, bleibt diese Option auch in Rom, Wien, Lissabon und Brüssel auf dem Tisch. Kippt Deutschland um, wird „am deutschen Modell orientieren" zum Argument für das Gegenteil. Das Quorum von 30.000 ist längst überschritten — der Petitionsausschuss muss sich also öffentlich damit befassen. Jede weitere Mitzeichnung macht diese Anhörung lauter.

I've just signed a petition with the German parliament. Petition 201716 asks the government to keep the rule that makes privately held bitcoin tax-free after a year. I'm Italian, I can't vote there and I don't pay taxes there. I signed anyway, and I think every bitcoiner in Europe should. You don't need German citizenship or residence to do it. Deadline: 15 September. 🇩🇪 TODAY Privately held bitcoin counts as an "other economic good". Sell after more than 12 months and the gain is tax-free. Sell within 12 months and it's taxed at your personal income rate, with a €1,000 exemption limit. WHAT THE GOVERNMENT WANTS The cabinet's budget decision of 6 July would reclassify private crypto as capital income (Einkünfte aus Kapitalvermögen): a flat ~25% tax on every sale, with no tax-free holding period at all. None of it is law yet. There's no bill, and no cut-off date. That's exactly why it can still be stopped. WHY SIGNING The 12-month rule isn't a loophole. It's a coherent treatment of bitcoin as property, confirmed by the tax courts, that rewards saving instead of churn — and it's one of the friendliest regimes in Europe. Why non-Germans should care: Germany is the reference case. If the EU's largest economy keeps a rule that treats bitcoin as savings rather than a casino chip, that option stays on the table in Rome, Vienna, Lisbon and Brussels. If Germany folds, "align with the German model" becomes an argument for the opposite. The 30,000 quorum is already cleared, so the Petitions Committee has to take it up in public session. Every additional signature makes that hearing louder.

<rant> I discovered Bitcoin in its early days, back in 2011. I was lucky. I was simply searching the internet for a way to receive donations anonymously for Clipperz.is, an online password manager I created with a friend, a small project with a truly paranoid threat model. Happy users wanted to send us money, but we did not want to know their names, their email addresses, or, even worse, the details of their PayPal or bank accounts. Bitcoin was the right solution to our very specific problem. To me, Bitcoin was a tool, not a religion or a get-rich-quick scheme. It was a tool that nicely complemented our little project and served the interests of its small user base of geeks. It took me time and effort to understand the much larger potential of Bitcoin, and this was only possible because of the people I met along this journey of discovery. A remarkably eclectic crowd: techies and laypeople, young and seasoned, spanning the entire political spectrum, all united by a shared fascination with Bitcoin. This tiny community of Italian Bitcoiners was full of enthusiasm, and it fueled my passion for the technology. Quite naturally, Bitcoin became the cornerstone of my professional life. For several years, I was completely absorbed in startup life and didn't spend much time attending Bitcoin events or following the Bitcoin Twitter bubble. Bitcoin itself was more than enough to keep me busy, enthusiastic, and intellectually stimulated. Now that my life is no longer so hectic, I am able to spend more time here on Nostr or attending Bitcoin events, big and small. And I’ve realized that things have changed dramatically. What is most disconcerting to me is this: where has the openness to diversity and the richness of ideas from the early days gone? I’m encountering almost exclusively Bitcoiners who rigidly conform to a standard set of beliefs, individuals who identify with some combination of the following totems: no taxes, no vaccines, pro-guns, anti-immigration, global warming is a hoax, the EU is a dictatorship, long live Mises, long live Milei, long live Bukele, HODL, bull run, to the moon, God, family, gym, steak and eggs… Never a dissenting voice. Yet back in the distant year of 2011, it was clear to us that Bitcoin was for everyone. Even today, I keep hearing that, but at the same time, a narrative, sometimes delivered in a harsh tone, has emerged that pushes away a large portion of potential users who don’t necessarily identify with this bundle of convictions. Understanding and embracing Bitcoin requires significant effort and genuine intellectual curiosity. Let’s not make the journey of discovering and understanding Bitcoin harder than it already is. Bitcoin is for everyone. Even today. </rant>

An open letter from 70 European renowned economists asks for an acceleration in the launch of the digital Euro. While these academics correctly identifies the risks of Europe’s current dependence on foreign payment monopolies, its proposed solution (the Digital Euro) suffers from a profound ignorance of an existing, superior alternative: Bitcoin. The signatories frame the Digital Euro as the "only defense" for European sovereignty, yet they overlook a battle-tested technology that already achieves their stated goals without the inherent risks of a centralized state currency. They claim that a European CBDC is the "only" way to ensure resilience. However, Bitcoin has operated 24/7 since 2009 with 99.9% uptime, providing a globally available, robust payment infrastructure that is "immediately available" today, unlike the Digital Euro which remains a project with mired in political negotiations with undefined technological foundations. The economists all belong to SFL (Sustainable Finance Lab), an independent academic think tank stemming out of Utrecht University’s School of Economics. “The mission of the Sustainable Finance Lab is to contribute to a financial sector that serves people and planet.” And yet, in 2025, they still ignore Bitcoin. Nature just published a paper about a study conducted on the Milan metro. Researchers observed the behavior of passengers when confronted with an everyday social need. - Baseline Condition: When a woman who appeared to be pregnant entered a train car under normal circumstances, 37.6% of the seated passengers offered her a seat. - Experimental Condition: When an individual dressed as Batman entered the same train car at the same time, the percentage of passengers who offered their seat to the pregnant woman significantly increased to 67.2%. Researchers attributed this stark difference to the effect of unexpected stimuli. The sudden appearance of an unusual figure (Batman) served as a strong distraction or alerting event. When confronted with something highly unexpected, people are forced to break their routine and become more alert to their immediate surroundings. This heightened state of awareness causes them to notice the needs of others, such as the pregnant woman, more readily than they would in their normal, inattentive state. Client Challenge

I just finished reading the "comprehensive compilation of controversial actions and statements by Luke Dashjr" assembled by @Jameson Lopp, and I have to say ... wow! Beyond the nothingburgerness of the entire OP_RETURN debate, I am genuinely concerned that a significant number of people are following him in this crusade and are not troubled by his authoritarian tendencies. These include statements like: "disobeying the State is a sin," "law is a subset of morality," "laws are just by default," "adultery is a crime that deserves capital punishment," "Rosa Parks' actions were not justifiable," and more. These extreme "values" obviously have an impact on what Luke believes Bitcoin should be used for and who should be allowed to use it. To him, even blacklisting addresses is a viable option. Perhaps the best option for Luke and his followers is to fork Bitcoin and launch a new coin with rules and a protocol that align with their morality and traditional values. As for me, I remain deeply committed to Bitcoin as a tool for freedom, financial inclusion, and justice. A tool that can reduce the disparities and distortions of the current financial system. But critically, it must remain a tool for everyone, criminals included. Lopp's article here:

I’m not a developer, and I’ve always been terrible at sysadmin-type tasks. That’s why I always resisted switching to a Linux laptop as my daily driver. A year ago, I finally decided to make an Ubuntu machine my main workhorse. I was proud of myself but also incredibly uncomfortable—always nervous about messing things up, unable to handle simple tasks like properly setting up my disks, and constantly confused by the different ways to install apps (snap, flatpak, …). Well, that’s all over now, thanks to the Warp AI-powered terminal! It’s like having one of my smartest dev friends sitting next to me, but without the embarrassment of constantly having to ask for help. Today, Warp helped me set up a RAID 1 disk to mirror my main storage. Then, I asked it to run a check for keyloggers, and I ended up with a cron job that runs weekly to scan for all kinds of threats (rootkits, viruses, open ports, etc.). As a bonus, it even sends me a nice report with the test results via email. I can't recommend it enough! The free plan will easily cover everything you need to become a Linux power user.
