if big miners won't mine the blocks with the new softfork, difficulty will go down on the softfork chain overtime. then it just becomes profitable to put work on the soft work chain because you can produce more blocks for a while until the adjustment and then if the softfork has the more work it eats the other chain. because its soft fork, which means chain with the most work wins.
