Is A2 Dairy Really “Safe”? Let’s Talk About It. 🥛
You’ve probably heard that A2 milk is the better version of dairy, and compared to what’s sold in most grocery stores, it is.
The truth is, most cows in the U.S. are A1, which produce a protein (A1 beta-casein) that breaks down into a morphine-like compound called BCM-7 during digestion.
That’s what causes bloating, inflammation, congestion, and the feeling that your body just doesn’t “like” dairy anymore.
A2 dairy, on the other hand, contains the original beta-casein that human bodies evolved to digest, the same type found in mother’s milk and traditional milks from goats, sheep, and water buffalo.
But here’s what most people don’t realize:
Even A2 cow dairy isn’t always perfect for everyone.
If your gut is inflamed, your immune system is overactive, or you’re still detoxing from processed foods and seed oils, you might still feel off even when switching to A2 milk.
Symptoms that may signal sensitivity (even to A2):
•Bloating or gassiness after dairy
•Brain fog or sluggishness
•Sinus congestion or post-nasal drip
•Breakouts, eczema, or hives
•Joint stiffness or inflammation
•Fatigue or mood changes after meals
These reactions don’t mean you’re “lactose intolerant”, they’re often tied to immune or inflammatory responses to the proteins themselves, not the lactose sugar.
What to Try Instead
If you’re still sensitive to A2 cow dairy, try shifting to:
✅ Goat milk – closest in structure to human milk; naturally A2; easier on digestion. It does have a ‘gamey’ or ‘cheesy’ taste.
✅ Sheep milk – richer in minerals and short-chain fats that soothe inflammation. Mild taste.
✅ Water buffalo milk – creamy, high in protein, and loaded with nutrients without the harsh effects of A1 cows. Tastes mild, similar to cow dairy.
These animals still produce the original A2 beta-casein, which means no BCM-7, no opioid response, and far less inflammation.
Bottom Line
A2 dairy is a major upgrade, but if your body still reacts, it’s a sign your system needs gentler support. Start with goat, sheep, or buffalo dairy while you heal.
Your ancestors didn’t drink ultra-processed milk from confined Holstein cows. They sourced pure, living dairy from animals that thrived on grass, sunshine, and care.
