Backdoor Digital ID? The EU’s Entry Exit System (EES)
The EU’s Entry/ exit system (EES) launched in October is heralded as modernization of border control, which efficiently measures record non-EU visitors; entries and exits into the Schengen area. It replaces manual passport stamping, is said to help reduce queues, while improving security by detecting overstays. Yet, under the convenience and efficiency narrative we can see that this isn’t really about efficient borders and the real question is it, in actuality, a “backdoor” to digital ID and a globallly integrated surveillance infrastructure?
