Otherwise, he will tear the new and the piece from it will not match the old cloak. Likewise, no one pours new wine into old wineskins. Otherwise, the new wine will burst the skins, and it will be spilled, and the skins will be ruined. Rather, new wine must be poured into fresh wineskins. He stood over her, rebuked the fever, and it left her. She got up immediately and waited on them. At sunset, all who had people sick with various diseases brought them to him. He laid his hands on each of them and cured them. And demons also came out from many, shouting, โ€œYou are the Son of God.โ€ But he rebuked them and did not allow them to speak because they knew that he was the Christ. At daybreak, Jesus left and went to a deserted place. The crowds went looking for him, and when they came to him, they tried to prevent him from leaving them. He stood up to read and was handed a scroll of the prophet Isaiah. He unrolled the scroll and found the passage where it was written: The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to bring glad tidings to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim liberty to captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to let the oppressed go free, and to proclaim a year acceptable to the Lord. Rolling up the scroll, he handed it back to the attendant and sat down, and the eyes of all in the synagogue looked intently at him. He said to them, โ€œToday this Scripture passage is fulfilled in your hearing.โ€ And all spoke highly of him and were amazed at the gracious words that came from his mouth. They also asked, โ€œIs this not the son of Joseph?โ€ He said to them, โ€œSurely you will quote me this proverb, โ€˜Physician, cure yourself,โ€™ and say, โ€˜Do here in your native place the things that we heard were done in Capernaum.โ€™โ€ And he said, โ€œAmen, I say to you, no prophet is accepted in his own native place. Indeed, I tell you, there were many widows in Israel in the days of Elijah when the sky was closed for three and a half years and a severe famine spread over the entire land. It was to none of these that Elijah was sent, but only to a widow in Zarephath in the land of Sidon. Again, there were many lepers in Israel during the time of Elisha the prophet; yet not one of them was cleansed, but only Naaman the Syrian.โ€ When the people in the synagogue heard this, they were all filled with fury. They rose up, drove him out of the town, and led him to the brow of the hill on which their town had been built, to hurl him down headlong. For whoever wishes to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will find it. What profit would there be for one to gain the whole world and forfeit his life? John had said to Herod, โ€œIt is not lawful for you to have your brotherโ€™s wife.โ€ Herodias harbored a grudge against him and wanted to kill him but was unable to do so. Herod feared John, knowing him to be a righteous and holy man, and kept him in custody. When he heard him speak he was very much perplexed, yet he liked to listen to him. She had an opportunity one day when Herod, on his birthday, gave a banquet for his courtiers, his military officers, and the leading men of Galilee. Herodiasโ€™ own daughter came in and performed a dance that delighted Herod and his guests. The king said to the girl, โ€œAsk of me whatever you wish and I will grant it to you.โ€ He even swore many things to her, โ€œI will grant you whatever you ask of me, even to half of my kingdom.โ€ She went out and said to her mother, โ€œWhat shall I ask for?โ€ She replied, โ€œThe head of John the Baptist.โ€ The girl hurried back to the kingโ€™s presence and made her request, โ€œI want you to give me at once on a platter the head of John the Baptist.โ€ The king was deeply distressed, but because of his oaths and the guests he did not wish to break his word to her. So he promptly dispatched an executioner with orders to bring back his head. He went off and beheaded him in the prison. He brought in the head on a platter and gave it to the girl. Since the bridegroom was long delayed, they all became drowsy and fell asleep. At midnight, there was a cry, โ€˜Behold, the bridegroom! Come out to meet him!โ€™ Then all those virgins got up and trimmed their lamps. The foolish ones said to the wise, โ€˜Give us some of your oil, for our lamps are going out.โ€™ But the wise ones replied, โ€˜No, for there may not be enough for us and you. Go instead to the merchants and buy some for yourselves.โ€™ While they went off to buy it, the bridegroom came and those who were ready went into the wedding feast with him. Then the door was locked.
