Fuck me I LOVE QUAKE THE GAME. Quake and id Software moved gaming forward in a few big ways: 1. Real-time 3D as the standard Wolfenstein 3D, Doom, and then Quake helped establish the first-person shooter and pushed games from fake 3D to fully real-time 3D worlds. Quake in particular was a major step because enemies, spaces, and movement all existed in a true 3D environment. 2. Internet and LAN multiplayer culture Doom popularized deathmatch, and Quake helped turn network multiplayer into a core PC gaming activity. LAN parties, dedicated servers, and competitive online FPS culture owe a lot to Quake-era design. 3. Mouse-look, fast movement, skill-based FPS control Quake helped normalize the control language of modern FPS games: mouse aiming, strafing, rocket jumping, circle jumping, bunny hopping, and high-speed combat with a very high skill ceiling. 4. Modding as a core part of a game’s life id made their games unusually moddable for the time. Quake mods led to entirely new genres and communities. Notable examples: - Team Fortress started as a Quake mod. - A lot of level design, total conversions, and custom server culture grew from id’s games. 5. Game engine licensing id was one of the clearest early examples of separating game and engine as a business. Licensing the Quake engine helped shape the middleware/engine business model later used across the industry. 6. Client-server multiplayer architecture Quake moved away from peer-to-peer approaches and helped establish a stronger client-server model for online action games, which became the long-term standard for competitive multiplayer. 7. 3D graphics acceleration adoption GLQuake was a big moment in making hardware-accelerated 3D graphics feel like the future on PC. It helped push players toward dedicated 3D GPUs and accelerated the transition away from software rendering. 8. Esports and spectator culture Quake was one of the foundations of competitive esports FPS. Duel formats, clan play, demos, frag movies, and early shoutcasting all grew heavily out of Quake communities. 9. Shareware distribution and PC-first success Before digital storefronts, id proved that PC games could spread massively through shareware and word of mouth. That was a major business and distribution innovation for its era. 10. Open technology and source release culture id became well known for eventually releasing source code for older engines. That helped preservation, education, ports, and engine experimentation for decades. Long live the king.
