Last week, I had the privilege of visiting Nairobi, Kenya, where I witnessed firsthand the incredible proof of work being done by Bitcoin circular economy communities on the ground. One of the highlights of my visit was spending time with Afribit Kibera, a powerful example of grassroots Bitcoin adoption in action. I had the opportunity to learn how they strategically build and sustain a local circular economy โ€” onboarding merchants, educating residents, and enabling businesses within Kibera to accept Bitcoin as a medium of exchange. Seeing small shops and vendors integrate Bitcoin payments into their daily operations was not just inspiring, but a clear demonstration that adoption is practical and achievable when community comes first. It was a pleasure to meet Ronnie and Mitchel of Afribit Kibera, whose commitment and consistency are driving real impact. Their leadership reflects long-term vision, strategic community engagement, and a deep understanding of local economic realities. I also had the chance to meet Obi, founder of FediMint, and we discussed how federated systems and community custody models can further accelerate secure and scalable Bitcoin usage in emerging markets. Beyond the education and strategy sessions, we shared great moments, laughter, and meaningful conversations with Afribit Kibera community members. I gained valuable insights into their operational strategies, merchant onboarding processes, and long-term expansion plans for growing Bitcoin adoption sustainably across Kenya. Thank you Ronnie and Mitchel for the incredible work being done at Afribit Kibera. High signal โšก Bitcoin adoption in Kenya.
Last week I had the privilege of visiting Nairobi, Kenya to witness firsthand the incredible proof of work being done by the local Bitcoin circular economy community. I visited BitBiashara, one of the most inspiring Bitcoin circular economy initiatives in the country. I learned how they strategically drive adoption at the grassroots level โ€” onboarding merchants, enabling shops to accept Bitcoin payments, and building a real peer-to-peer transactional ecosystem within their communities. It was a pleasure meeting Rosaline, founder of BitBiashara, whose leadership and clarity of vision are pushing practical Bitcoin usage forward. I also met Fidel, founder of Bitika โ€” an innovative BTC product that allows anyone in Kenya to buy Bitcoin instantly using their M-Pesa number and receive it directly into their Lightning wallet. We shared great moments, laughter, and deep strategic discussions with the BitBiashara community members. I gained valuable insights into their growth models, education strategies, and long-term plans for scaling adoption. Thank you BitBiashara and Bitika. High signal โšก Bitcoin adoption in Kenya.
Last week, while traveling back home from Nairobi, Kenya to Tanzania, I had the opportunity to attend Trezor Academy 02, hosted by Bitcoin Arusha at the Westerwelle Startup Haus Arusha. The event was truly epic โ€” practical, insightful, and impactful for the growing Bitcoin community in Arusha. Special recognition to Brian Mosha, founder of Chapsmart, for delivering a clear and detailed explanation of how the platform works. He demonstrated how users can seamlessly buy and sell Bitcoin, purchase airtime, refill mobile phones, and access additional digital financial services โ€” all in one place. Great work as well by Francis Njoroge and Kweks for delivering a powerful Bitcoin education pitch to the people of Arusha. The knowledge shared will definitely strengthen local adoption and awareness. @manlikekweks @Bitcoin Arusha @SatsTaggaโšก @Chapsmart
๐Ÿ“Œ What Is a Bitcoin ATM Machine? A Bitcoin ATM (Automated Teller Machine) is a specialized kiosk that allows users to buy and sometimes sell Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies using cash โ€” similar to how a bank ATM handles fiat currency. But unlike a bank ATM, it is not connected to a bank account; instead, it interacts with the Bitcoin blockchain and a cryptocurrency exchange. โš™๏ธ How Bitcoin ATMs Work โ€“ Step by Step 1. User Wallet Requirement To use a Bitcoin ATM you first need a crypto wallet (software or hardware) that can receive Bitcoin. This wallet has a public receiving address shown as a QR code you scan at the ATM. 2. Insert Cash (or Debit Card) You insert physical cash (e.g., Kenyan Shillings) into the machine. The ATM then converts that value into Bitcoin at the current market rate (often with a premium fee). 3. Transaction Execution The ATM sends the purchased Bitcoin directly to your wallet address through the blockchain. This transaction is recorded on the blockchain and confirmed by the Bitcoin network. 4. Receipt & Confirmation You receive a transaction receipt and may also get a confirmation code or SMS depending on the machine. Many ATMs require identity verification (KYC) for larger amounts to comply with anti-money-laundering rules. ๐Ÿ”„ Buy vs Sell Functionality One-way ATMs: Only let you buy Bitcoin with cash. Two-way ATMs: Allow selling Bitcoin for cash too. This feature isnโ€™t always available and depends on the model and operator. ๐Ÿง  Key Technical Characteristics ๐Ÿ“Š Blockchain Interaction Bitcoin ATMs donโ€™t hold your Bitcoin themselves; they initiate transactions on the blockchain which then propagate through the decentralized network. Funds are transferred peer-to-peer between the ATM providerโ€™s liquidity pool (or an exchange) and your wallet. ๐Ÿ” Security & Compliance Transactions leverage public-key cryptography โ€” you control the private key via your wallet; the ATM just facilitates the transfer. Recent trends are pushing mandatory ID checks (KYC) to meet global regulatory standards on money laundering. ๐Ÿ’ธ Fees and Costs Bitcoin ATMs often charge significant fees (premium on top of market price) compared to online exchanges. Typical costs can vary widely, impacted by liquidity and risk pricing from the ATM operator. ๐Ÿ“ Example: Bitcoin ATM in Nairobi One of the most reported Bitcoin ATMs in Kenya is installed at Two Rivers Mall in Nairobi, Kenya, specifically in the ground floor public areas near banking ATMs like those of NCBA Bank. Was nice to visit there last week . ๐Ÿ‘‰ The machine is typically branded โ€œBankless Bitcoinโ€ and positioned beside traditional ATMs for visibility. It enables users to buy and sell Bitcoin using cash in a high-traffic retail environment. โš ๏ธ Regulatory Note (Kenya-Specific) Kenyaโ€™s Virtual Assets Service Providers (VASP) Act came into force in late 2025, establishing a licensing regime for crypto services. However, as of the end of 2025 there were no licensed crypto ATM operators authorized by the Central Bank of Kenya (CBK) or the Capital Markets Authority (CMA). Any operator claiming a license may still be operating in a regulatory grey zone. ๐Ÿงฉ In Summary Feature Bitcoin ATM Purpose Buy and/or sell Bitcoin with cash Bank Account Needed? โŒ No Connected To Blockchain? โœ… Yes Wallet Required? โœ… Yes (to receive BTC) Regulation Needed? Varies by country (pending in Kenya) Fees Generally higher than online exchanges
Buying bananas ๐ŸŒ at the Afribit Kibera BTC circular community with Bitcoin using the Manna Bitcoin Wallet in Kibera, Nairobi ๐Ÿ‡ฐ๐Ÿ‡ช. Simple, fast, and completely peer-to-peer โ€” no cash involved, just seamless digital value exchange secured by the Bitcoin network. This is what real grassroots adoption looks like: everyday essentials purchased through a functioning circular economy. From fresh produce to small retail transactions, Bitcoin is becoming practical money within the community. Afribit Kibera continues to demonstrate true proof of work by turning education into action and building a sustainable local Bitcoin economy.
Paid in Bitcoin for a bike ride from the Afribit Kibera community to Narok Bus Station using the Manna Bitcoin Wallet. Fast, borderless, and frictionless โ€” no cash, no intermediaries, just pure peer-to-peer value transfer secured by the Bitcoin network. This is what living the Bitcoin standard looks like in real time: practical, efficient, and community powered. From small merchants to transport services, circular adoption is no longer a concept but a daily reality. Experiences like this prove that grassroots innovation in Kenya is driving meaningful financial inclusion and demonstrating true proof of work on the ground.
Paid in Bitcoin for 10 chapati for some GenZs at the Afribit Kibera community in Nairobi, Kenya, at one of the local motherโ€™s small cafรฉs using the Manna Bitcoin Wallet. Seamless, instant, and practical real peer-to-peer value exchange in action. Afribit Kibera stands out as one of the strongest Bitcoin circular economies in Kenya. The level of grassroots adoption, merchant integration, and youth engagement reflects true proof of work. This is not theory; itโ€™s implementation on the ground. Community-driven Bitcoin adoption is alive, functional, and scaling. ๐Ÿ™Œ๐Ÿงก๐Ÿ’ฅ
