Fun fact. There’s a company in Bellevue WA called Intellectual Ventures. Mostly owned by Gates. It’s a patent troll shop. They have an office and a lab for experiments. Sometime around 2013 I got to tour the lab. They had little plexiglass cages of mosquitoes all over the place and lasers shooting at them from across the room. They told me it was a “smart laser that burns the wings off. Soon you’ll be able to have a parameter around a house that mosquitoes can’t penetrate.” Then there was a tall tower of mosquitoes in another part of the lab. I asked about that and they said they were experimenting with terminator genes. I said “like GMO mosquitoes?”. The reply “exactly!” I remember at the time thinking, this will be how they kill us.

All I know is they had an office full of attorneys turning out patents. I asked them if they commercialized them and they said mostly no, they just watched for people to violate them and then sued them.
