why?
What about your own profile pic? Is that a sign that you don’t have nearly enough good arguments?

I mean, does my profile picture advertise a particular belief? Does my profile picture seem out of touch? Does the way I see my profile picture seem to be different than how people unlike me would see it? Personally, I just like the aesthetic of a guy smoking a pipe in his study. Also, that's supposedly a photo of the guy who wrote the quote in my banner.
In any case I'm not immune to the effect I mentioned. The reason I chose such an edgy username and the reason I have a political quote for my banner is because at the time I had just been banned from a website I loved, and I was very butthurt about it because I never got the opportunity to talk about it with the people who banned me or anyone from that website. It was a very quick pipeline from not being able to argue with people I disagreed with to radically changing how I presented myself.
An example of someone who is not me is militant anti-pedo people. Like, people who make hating pedophiles their whole personality and who get an erection when they think about hurting predators. It is evident to me that they don't ever talk with the people they hate so much, because of how vocal they can be. And it's no shock either. Not many people talk openly about being a pedophile, meaning that none of those people actually get to have a good argument.
I'm sure you can find many other examples though, that's just what I have the most personal experience with.
