Leave things as they are. The gold leaf stuff appears to work really well as a gimmick for white, at this stage i dont see any options for black. Perhaps something on the black side could work, maybe, but i simply would not risk it. Besides the black pieces indeed look pretty as they are. Put some felt under the stuff (what color? Classic green?) and call it day.

I agree, too much shine could make it gaudy. I have a heathered grey felt on hand. I might pick up some green to add tp the familiarity. Thank you.
