S9 hashing on direct DC solar and AC PSU hybrid system Here I have an S9 powdered both by the 12v DC output of a solar charge mppt controller and the output of an apw3++ plugged into an inverter. The output of the solar charge controller is wired directly to DC output lugs of the PSU. As the clouds roll by the output of the solar power decreases and the PSU delivers more power from the inverter. This same technique can be used by plugging the PSU into a grid powered outlet instead of the inverter. It's basically a way to subsidize the power consumption of a miner with solar power directly. It's pretty cool to watch. #bitcoin #bitcoinmining #plebminer #homemining #offgridmining #solarmining #offgrid#solarpower

I recently to learned that you can wire the DC output of a solar charge controller directly to the power lugs of a Bitcoin miner PSU. The power from the solar panels goes directly to the hash boards and if there isn't enough power, the PSU makes up the difference with ac power from the grid. It turned the PSU into off grid solar grid tie hybrid power source. All solar power is totally utilized, no loss. It's magical to watch the power draw from the PSU ebb and flow with the power output of the solar charge controller. This is technique is going to change the game here at the homestead as it will allow me to continue to expand the solar power production without having to get a larger inverter to fully utilize it. I can tie the additional solar power directly to the miners, skipping the batteries and inverter all together. Looking forward to showing this technique in action.

I don't usually repost #bitcoin stuff but I really dig this note. Tinkering with electrical systems is fun. Keep signing #danknotes my dude.

DC should be better efficiency too?
You hit the nail on the head. For the latest bitaxe 5v miners, dc-dc will be the way to go. A few dc-dc converters is simpler than going thru an inverter.
After 3 months of poor solar mining conditions, hashrate is ripping again, off grid, at the yurt. Late October was the last time a miner was plugged into the solar power system at the yurt. As the solar mining season comes to a close, the winter heating season begins and the miners are needed for heat in the house. The system was expanded to its maximum production potential with the existing inverter, and charge controllers. This allows for full utilization of the equipment for Bitcoin mining which fast tracking the return on investment. Since installing the equipment, Bitcoin mining has already recoupped 25 percent of the total cost. (There is a 30 percent tax refund/credit whatever the fuck too) It's a totally different story when denominating the expenses in Bitcoin (that's true of anything). The goal was to increase resilience and balance forms of capital. It's impossible to know when a extended power outage might occur and this solar power setup is enough to keep my essential loads running, plus I already had the miners to utilize the power in the meantime. Now, the system is completely installed, and I'm familiar with it's operations and repairs. After the power is out it's too late, and I'll wish I already had the system instead of Bitcoin anyway. #permaculture #permies #homesteading #meshtadel #bitcoin #bitcoinmining #plebminer #offgrid #solarpower #resilience

Here is a compilation of all my favorite mining notes from the last year. I guess use Bitcoin miners in almost every way I can think of. Cooking hash-vide style rabbit ramen with Bitcoin mining hot water heater The second meal cooked in the Bitcoin mining hot water heater is rabbit ramen soup. Rabbit grown and harvested right here at the homestead, along with these other ingredients from the homestead rabbit stock, garlic, and finally golden oyster mushrooms dehydrated with a Bitcoin miner. Soy sauce, rice vinegar, lemon, sesame oil, Japanese seven spice, salt, pepper, butter. All ingredients went into a silicone bag and submerged in the hot canola oil tank of the bitcoin mining hot water heater for 3 days. Hard to beat mining Bitcoin, heating water, and cooking food all at the same time. I can get the water up to 150f out of the tap with only 1500w of power consumption for the total system, miner, pumps, and all! Another super cool aspect of this mining setup is that it runs on 110v power instead of 220v. Not having access to a 220v circuit is often a limiting factor for pleb miners, especially when these sorts of applications don't always require so much power. By modifying the apw12 PSU and making a custom power cord, now I can plug the miner into an existing 110v circuit. It cost less than $20 to do the modification on the PSU plus using a modified apw12 vs a Loki + apw3++ allows for voltage attenuation and higher total power output. #permaculture #permies #homesteading #meshtadel #bitcoin #bitcoinmining #plebminer #homeminer #sousvide #rabbit #ramen #foodstr #stackingfunctions #doublespendenergy View quoted note →
